 Do you want to be part of a challenging but enjoyable experience? Now is Your Chance, Come on ScotTrek 2012

For ScotTrek 2012 we are going to be trekking through some of Scotland’s finest scenery. The detailed route is attached You will see red deer, probably eagles, and other birds. Much of the country is totally deserted – apart from us. You will have to be prepared to carry a rucsac with camping kit plus up to three days rations and fuel. It will not be easy and a good level of fitness is required. However it is within the capability of anyone who sets their mind to it and does some walking with a rucsac beforehand.

 LOGISTICS.  The planned overall dates (N Wales to N Wales) will be 22 July to 31 July 2012  A minibus will be used to transport members of the expedition from N Wales to near Blair Atholl and then we start with a lung-expanding trek over the Minigaig Pass. We will periodically meet up with the minibus  to resupply with rations and a change of socks. Those taking part will have to provide and pack their own 24 hour ration packs before leaving N Wales. No food will be provided centrally by the expedition leaders and we will not waste time shopping while on the expedition.

CLOTHING & EQUIPMENT. This must be provided by those taking part or by their group/unit. Advice on what is suitable will be given at the pre-expedition briefing. While the expedition is taking place in ‘summer’ this is no guarantee of good weather and a minimum of a three-season sleeping bag, good boots, sound tentage and a complete set of good quality waterproofs is required.

PRE-EXPEDITION  BRIEFING. This will comprise a day (probably in June 2012, exact date to be confirmed) which will deal with expedition planning, suitable clothing & equipment, rations etc. This day is obligatory and will probably be in the Menai Bridge area.

APPLICATIONS.  These will be on an individual basis and you do not have to be part of a group or unit party. If you are on your own you will be linked up with someone else in a similar situation. This is an expedition for anyone involved in Scouting in the Area, although first priority will be given to Explorer Scouts, then Scout Network then others.  Applications will be dealt with on a ‘first come, first served’ basis. Applications must be in by  1st May 2012 but if you leave it until then you may well be disappointed. Scout Network and Others will be notified on that date if they have been successful in their application.

DUKE OF EDINBURGH’S AWARD. This will qualify as a training expedition for any of the three awards – Bronze, Silver or Gold.

COST. This will be £120 This will NOT include food or any clothing you need to buy. A deposit of £30 must accompany your application (on the attached form) when you submit it. Should you not, ultimately, go this and the balance of £90 will only be refunded if your place is filled by someone else.

FINALLY this is not an expedition for those whose aim in life is to ‘chill out’, doss about and be generally lazy. It is for those who welcome a challenge in the company of good friends, who want to broaden their horizons and who like living life to the full.
